In celebration of Ukraine’s Independence Day, I want to honor the Ukrainian spirit of freedom.

With this composition, I want to convey a deeply contrasting, nuanced, and odd emotion – what it feels like to be free while being oppressed. The contradictory mixture of hardship and ease, grief and letting go, apathy and courage, hate and forgiveness.
In the modern world, many are fortunate to be born in a country where they don’t have to fight to live a peaceful life. Although the topic of war is understandably not top of mind for most people, it is very real for Ukrainians every day and night.
The fight for freedom happens on many fronts. Soldiers risk their lives on the battlefield. Civilians who choose to stay in their homes are targeted from the air every day. Refugees are outsiders in foreign countries and far from their homes and loved ones. In every case, the cost and sacrifice for freedom are immense.
May the world be inspired by the courage and dignity of Ukraine, and may the sacrifice of the Ukrainian people lead the way to a future where wars and oppression remain only in history books.

Українцям, що виборюють свободу будь-якою ціною. І тим, назавжди вільним на небесах.
Сьогодні, в День Незалежності України, я хочу віддати шану українському духові свободи.

Цією композицією я хочу передати глибоко суперечливе, тонке й дивне відчуття — як це: бути вільним під гнітом. Парадоксальне поєднання тяжких випробувань та легкості, скорботи й відпускання, апатії та хоробрості, ненависті й прощення.
У сучасному світі багатьом пощастило народитися в країні, де не доводиться боротися за саме право жити мирно. Хоч тема війни для більшості людей далека, для українців вона щоденна — і вдень, і вночі.
Боротьба за свободу ведеться на багатьох фронтах. Солдати ризикують життям на полі бою. Мирні жителі, які вирішили залишитися вдома, щодня стають мішенями авіаударів. Ті, хто виїхав, стають вигнанцями у чужих країнах, відірвані від своїх домівок і близьких. У кожному випадку ціна й жертва за свободу — величезні.
Нехай світ надихається відвагою та гідністю України, а жертва українського народу прокладе шлях до майбутнього, де війни й гноблення залишаться на сторінках підручників історії.
